A Nurse Coach’s Journey: Resilience, Healing, and Empowerment at ZenBeli
Introduction
Bethany Wilinson
Resilience isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a lifeline when life’s challenges seem unrelenting. My story, shaped by generational trauma, chronic illness, and a drive to help others, has led me on a path of personal discovery and professional transformation. Today, I’m proud to bring these lessons to ZenBeli, where our mission is to help you “Eat Happy Again” and empower you to reclaim control of your health.
Finding Strength in Struggle
From a young age, my family and I faced significant adversity. My father, juggling night school and multiple jobs, taught me the value of hard work and determination. Despite my own bouts of illness and debilitating allergies, I developed a deep desire to serve. This would eventually guide me to inner-city outreach programs, college athletics, and ultimately a career in healthcare.
As time passed, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis—an autoimmune disorder. My energy waned, and I found myself facing frequent injuries. Although I became a personal trainer to help others, unresolved food intolerances and mental health challenges led me into a dangerous eating disorder. It was only when I found myself in rehab, at just 75 pounds, that I realized I wanted to fight for my life.
Embracing a New Path
Within a year of leaving rehab, I gained back a healthy weight and focused intently on healing both mind and body. But my journey was far from over. Another autoimmune condition left me in severe pain and with deformed joints in my arms. Daily tasks grew daunting. Still, I refused to be deterred from my passion for helping others. I enrolled in nursing school, overcame chronic pain and brain fog, and ultimately found my place in the fast-paced environment of an emergency department.
That decade brought joyful milestones—like the birth of my daughter after years of infertility—and heartbreaking losses. Witnessing my cousin lose his battle with chronic illness and mental health underscored a critical truth: genuine healing requires a holistic focus on mind, body, and spirit.
Holistic Wellness: Mind, Body & Spirit
Guided by my experiences, I learned to truly listen to my body, manage food intolerances, and integrate herbs, functional medicine, and mental health support. Over time, my lab work revealed no lingering inflammation, and a Lupus diagnosis went into remission without relying on long-term medication. These hard-earned victories reshaped my understanding of health: caring for every aspect of ourselves is crucial.
As an ER nurse, I saw countless cases where lifestyle adjustments and preventive care could have made a real difference. Fueled by that realization, I pursued a master’s degree in nursing with a focus on prevention. I became a nurse coach to integrate nutrition, life coaching, and functional medicine principles, empowering others to address the root causes of illness.
